Join Our Wonderfully Wild Team of Volunteers
As a non-profit organization, The Living Desert relies on the generous support of our beloved volunteers, who are an important part of our zoo team and further the impact of conservation every day.
"What could be more enriching and inspiring than sharing my time with The Living Desert's incredible animals and beautiful gardens or meeting guests from all over the world? It is an oasis, a precious gem, and it is a joy to be there"
- Volunteer at The Living Desert since 2021
Volunteer
Program
Each day, our volunteers connect with guests from around the world to create unforgettable experiences. These passionate ambassadors are essential in helping guests plan their visit, learn more about the plants and animals throughout the zoo, inspire conservation action, and so much more! For example, our volunteers are key players in facilitating hands-on adventure at the Petting Kraal, guiding guests through the interactive learning opportunities at the Discovery Center, and interpreting the important medical care and veterinary procedures that take place in the Tennity Wildlife Hospital.
Active volunteers receive several benefits, including exclusive educational opportunities, discounts, and social activities.
New volunteer orientations are held quarterly.
"I love continually learning, sharing, and making friends. I am passionate about sharing The Living Desert with our guests!"
- Volunteer at The Living Desert since 2009

Teens are invited to gain a new, wonderfully wild perspective of The Living Desert through the ZooTeen volunteer program!
ZooTeens are high school students who are curious, lifelong learners with a special interest in conservation, education and have a passion to give back to their community.
As a ZooTeen volunteer you are an agent of conservation and will have the opportunity to learn about animal care, zoo careers and gain valuable job skills while volunteering in a fun and collaborative learning environment.
ZooTeens receive a comprehensive education and training in public speaking, guest services as well as area specific training in our guest interactions areas such as the Petting Kraal, Discovery Center, G-Scale Model Train Display and more!
ZooTeens that demonstrate considerable commitment and dedication to volunteering will also have opportunities to promote the mission of the Living Desert through volunteering as Animal Keeper Assistants and Educational Interpreters, too.
